Mother and Child
(Manatee Tears)

In 1996, while exploring Belize's coastline south of the Deep River
estuary, I came upon two campsites used by manatee hunters.  At each, entire skeletons of these docile endangered animals were found.  They had been slaughtered for their meat.

I collected the evidence and offered it to local environmentalists, who did
not want the skeletons.

I created this necklace, from mother and child ribs to
epitomize the tragedy.
