Costa Rica Rainforest
This map of Costa Rica shows that forest cover has been lost
(due to excessive logging, milpa, and especially here -
conversion to inefficient cattle ranches).
Belize has time to learn from the mistakes of other countries.
It can be argued that some controlled logging could be
permitted. One plan in Belize called for selective logging
of tagged trees only, with fallow periods of 40 years
thereafter. Of course, any such plan is only as
good as its oversight. Therein is one problem.
Politics is another. If logging is to be permitted, under
controlled circumstances, is there an
open bid process
for logging concessions so that realistic
revenues are obtained?
